STRUCTURAL WARRANTIES VS EXTENDED WARRANTIES

Structural Warranties vs Extended Warranties

What's the Difference?

Structural warranties cover the core structure, or load bearing 'bones' of a home. They are also referred to as Builder Warranties, 10 Year or 1-2-10 Year Warranties.

An Extended Warranty, sometimes called a Service Contracts, is an additional coverage plan you can purchase to protect various household appliances and mechanical systems in your home.

Structural Warranty

WHAT'S COVERED?
A structural warranty covers the load bearing elements of a home for a set period of time, including things like load-bearing walls, the foundation, and the roof. The warranty ensures protection against defects or issues that arise from poor workmanship.

HOW DO I GET A STRUCTURAL WARRANTY FOR MY HOME?
Structural Warranties are usually included when you build or purchase a new home. Your builder will provide you with a warranty booklet that contains important information. It will outline the warranty term, what is covered what it doesn't cover, and the procedure for making a claim, should an issue arise.

If your builder does not provide a structural warranty, feel free to ask if it's an option. Generally speaking, only newly constructed, unoccupied homes are eligible for coverage so be sure to inquire long before you go to closing or move in.

HOW LONG DOES COVERAGE LAST?
A 10-year warranty, sometimes called a 1-2-10 year warranty, is the most common and traditional warranty used.

An exclusive feature of RWC is our state-specific warranties, alternatively referred to as Customized State Warranties (CSW). The term of this warranty is based on individual state statutes, so if your home carries a CSW warranty, we advise referring to your warranty documents for details.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE TO FIX DEFECTS?
The answer to that varies. It will depend on which warranty was chosen for your home and the timing of the defect within the coverage period. It's best to consult your home's warranty booklet for guidelines on how to file a claim.

Please remember that the structural warranty pertains to concerns impacting the strength, integrity, and security of the home, such as cracks in the foundation or wall framing or beam movement. Therefore, it’s essential to recognize that non-structural concerns, such as damage to driveways, landscaping, normal wear and tear, or failure to properly maintain the home, may not qualify for claims submission.
Extended Warranty

Extended Warranty

WHAT'S COVERED?
Extended Warranties provide coverage on household items like refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, water heaters, AC units, etc. for a specific period of time.

HOW DO I GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR MY APPLIANCES / SYSTEMS?
At RWC, Extended Warranties are exclusively available for purchase through your builder (for new construction) or a Real Estate Professional (for homes on the market). You can take comfort in the fact that you retain the decision-making power, allowing you to tailor your coverage to suite your budget.

Obtaining coverage through the builder or realtor provides various advantages, simplifying the administrative process. They take care of the paperwork and streamline communication with the warranty provider, ensuring a hassle-free experience for homeowners.

HOW LONG DOES COVERAGE LAST?
The duration of coverage on an extended warranty can vary depending on the plan you choose. It can range from a 1-year contract to 5 years, and everything in between offering homeowners the flexibility to find the right balance between protection and affordability.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE TO REPAIR AN ISSUE?
The responsibility for fixing a problem falls on a service provider. Your warranty documentation will provide instructions on how to report a problem.

Furthermore, it's important to highlight the fantastic upside of the RWC extended warranty. You see, most warranty companies force homeowners to use their authorized repair people. This can cause concern like unreliable service or blackout areas. In contrast, we believe that as a homeowner, you should have the freedom to choose a repair provider you trust. This approach provides a higher level of confidence in knowing who will arrive at your doorstep.
